The Not So Sexy Missing Link to Your Fat Loss Success

Is there a missing link when it comes to fat loss success?

Over the past twenty years, I’ve done hundreds of sit downs with new clients that I have worked with in person and online. I would sit down with them and find out what their goals were and assess their current fitness situation. From there I would design them a workout program that I thought would get them the fat loss results they were looking for. Some would take my program and do it on their own and others would hire me to help them execute it. Now, I wish I could say that everyone I worked with saw amazing results but unfortunately that wasn’t the case.

That got me thinking and it wasn’t until a couple years ago that I started seeing a pattern. What I believe to be the missing link to a client or someone reaching their fitness and fat loss goals.

When I was a young fitness coach, I always thought people came to me for my knowledge and expertise. I had study Kinesiology and knew the biomechanics of movement and the body really well. I felt I could  write some of the best workouts around.

“That’s why they come to me,” I convinced myself.

But there was a pattern within these sessions. I would ask my new clients about their workout history, assuming it was either pretty bleak or they were confused at exercise execution.

I was wrong.

Most of the people had worked out for a majority of their life. They, generally, knew what to do. They could squat decently. Could things be improved? Of course! But exercise execution wasn’t what was holding them back.

“Well it must be nutrition!!” I thought to myself.

And yes, most of my new clients needed help with their nutrition. A lot of help! But it wasn’t what I thought.

Since I wasn’t a registered dietician I  used a generic Nutrition Guide pdf and gave it to all my new clients. It talked about all the basics: eating fruits and veggies, getting enough protein, drinking water, eating slowly. All the things you hear most fitness professionals constantly preach.

I assumed this would help them make changes with their nutritional habits. I mean, how couldn’t you?!? The information was so compelling you’d have to be crazy to not listen to it.

But again, I was wrong.

People already knew this stuff.

Wait I should eat more fruits and veggies? No one ever told me that,” said no one. Ever.

So what was it?

It wasn’t the workouts or nutrition information. What was the true missing link to their fat loss and overall fitness success? What was preventing them from reaching their goals?

One. Simple. Word.

ACCOUNTABILITY.

They knew what to do. They had all the information. And honestly with technology today and $25 worth of decent equipment, they have everything they need to come up with a pretty good workout and nutrition plan.

But nobody does that.

So it’s not a lack of information. It’s a lack of execution. A lack of accountability holding them to their plan.

That is the missing link. That is what you need if you are looking for long lasting fat loss success.

I know that sounds so simple but what I have found is when accountability is present and you have a coach holding you to the goals you have set for yourself, success follows.

According to The American Society of Training and Development (ASTD), which did a study on accountability, found that you have a 65% chance of completing a goal if you commit to someone. And  the study goes on to state that if you have a specific accountability appointment with a person you’ve committed, you will increase your chance of success by up to 95%!

Man had I know this I might have skipped the student loan debt I racked up and just offered myself as an accountability coach instead of spending all that time and money learning about how the body works 🙂

No, I’m just kidding! It is important that you seek out a fitness professional that knows the human body and knows how to assess you and prescribe the right plan but I am serious the missing link is the accountability piece. It is one reason I formed the All About Health and Fitness Facebook Group.

So, let me ask you. Have you tried the latest and greatest diet or workout lately? Did you stick with it? Did you see results? I hope you did but if for some reason you fell back into your bad habits and you need a coach to help you stay accountable then let’s talk.

I guarantee, you won’t be disappointed with the results:)
